Almost Wordless Wednesday: U.S.S. President Polk
A prelude to French Friday: The U.S.S. President Polk departed Noumea on October 23, 1945 with Louisette Martin Aponte (my paternal grandmother), her 3 year old son (my Dad), and 5 month old daughter (Aunt Linda), bound for San Francisco during Operation Magic Carpet. I encourage you to visit the links above to understand what this trip must have been like. Looking at the passenger list (which I have to find out if I can post here), I can’t help but wonder about the fates of the other young women with small children in tow on that trip…

Very interesting. Thank you for the links. It was an interesting time for our country. One that we need to revisit as our current troops are brought home.

Thanks, Theresa. I’m looking forward to understanding more about this time period and am about to start a book called “Rock of Contention: French and Americans at War in New Caledonia.” And, I love the title and byline on your blog…I’ve subscribed and look forward to keeping up with it. Cheers, Sharon
Sharon, I had found the log where your Dad and my Mom’s names were on. Im sure you have that too, I got it at ancestery.com, when I was doing this (not like you) too! Wanting to find out about my biological father! Can we post ANY picture? (of the family of course!)
I do have it, thanks. The only reason I didn’t post it was because I needed to find out about Ancestry.com’s policy about citing sources that came from them. I will put it up soon (I’m working on a photo database for this site). Yes, you can post any picture, but please read the Privacy Policy on the About page first (no current pics of living family without their permission and no pics of minor kids). Thanks!
